Ownership or Leasing Digital Space

This week was a little bit of an ego check for me....I am embarrassed to say that I have worked with technology my entire career, but didn't have a solid understanding of what a domain is. I ended up reading all of the articles and watching the video below before I really understood so maybe this will help others as well.

One thing that stuck out to me was from Dr. Harapnuik's post, "Who Own the Eportfolio". He mentioned that we continue talking about the importance of reflection, but that reflection is useless if the student isn't reflecting on ideas that they own. In order to truly accomplish this, students must be given ownership of their learning. This reminded me of a quote that I retweeted today from Alice Keeler. She said "How do we create leaders if we do not let kids make decisions?" Following directions and completing assignments will not create leaders or ownership over learning. We must rethink how we approach this if we are serious about the COVA model.

I got to thinking about what happens to our students' work once they leave our school. Once they are no longer students at Whiteouse ISD, they lose access to their school Google accounts which means unless they saved the files elsewhere, they lose everything in their Google Drives. How does this make our students owners of their assignments and products? The answer- it doesn't. They are simply leasing out space until they graduate or move.
